la Villa Medici del Vascello à San Giovanni in Croce
The Exhibition – Ville del Rinascimento Padano: I Bastioni, Il Portico e la Fattoria
Curated by Alberto Faliva, the exhibition presents eight little-known 16th-century villas located in the Po River Valley, Italy. Influenced by the layouts found in unpublished architectural treatises and Renaissance drawings, these villas are distinguished by what Faliva defines as "eccentric architectural works".
Set in open countryside, these villas combine both fortified and residential elements, sharing features such as moats, central courtyards, and corner towers or projecting avant-corps. These elements echo the quincunx plans developed in the 15th century by Leonardo da Vinci, Francesco di Giorgio, and others interested in the fusion of architecture and military engineering.
These villas can be understood as "pseudo-fortified residences"—palatial country estates designed to evoke power and territorial authority through their defensive appearance: rusticated walls, crenellated towers, and battlements contribute to this visual narrative of strength.
Wooden models were handcrafted by Ivan Simonato, from the Centro Studi Andrea Palladio, Vicenza.
